CONCENTRATION

For my AP 3D concentration I wanted to express the different elements of motifs, structure, and textures through the simple geometric shape of a square. The simple faces of a square can contain a broad range of variety of motifs with different influences of contemporary art and islamic art. Within those motifs, there's also a variety of mediums which creates different textures of the pieces. With different motifs, the medium will change, affecting the overall composition and perception of the pieces.  The structure may also fluctuate, depending on the medium and armature but overall, there's a basic sense of the geometric shape of a square. A simple square can develop into something more, something beautiful inside or out. "Less is more" and sometimes, simple is beautiful.

Andrew Liszewski

Tunnel House (Installation)

This was an installation by Andrew Liszewski. It was constructed out of the boards on the outside of the house. It's was constructed and torn down in 2005. It creates a kind of black hole effect in which the whole 'inversion' illusions is formed. It's really cool how it forms that vortex kind of feeling and linear quality. It's like the house is being sucked into a vacuum; it's the second before the whole house gets swallowed by a sucking force. It's also really amazing how this isn't just a decoration but once you walk through it you reach an adjacent garden on the other side. The construction of the board is quite elaborately tedious. Imagine taking apart all those boards and forming them into a linear composition that alters from each line. While connecting the boards, you also have to think about how it'll look and actually having the boards put together and allowing a whole through it.

Dustin Edward Arnold

Dustin Edward Arnold

He's a commercial/ studio designer. He mostly works with photography. This is the first work by him that I saw and I was attracted by the subtle feelings of vulnerability and misery of the piece. The lighting and the color of the medium already gives a sense of despondence and the broken/ cracked parts of the face adds onto the sense of vulnerability. To me the second picture gives a sense of lost identity. For many teenagers finding their own identity is a tedious process and so it feels like the broken parts of the body are trying to emerge from the platform. The last picture is a hand under some kind of transparent fabric. It seems like the hand is trying to reach out for something but still separated by a thin layer that prevents it. It adds to the sense of despair and helplessness; it's like reaching for something that will never be yours. Overall, I just really like how the pieces can provoke that dark feeling within all our hearts that we're all afraid of, even if the emotions evoked may be different.
